Nicolas Jackson: Striker caps good start to Aston Villa career with two goals to beat Manchester City

Saturday’s victory came on the fourth anniversary of Emery’s appointment as Villa manager.

Under the Spaniard’s leadership, they became fixtures in the upper echelons of the Premier League, regulars in European competitions and ended a 30-year wait for a major trophy by winning the Europa League.

Results are one thing, but there are also plenty of examples of players who have been rejuvenated or reached new heights during their careers under Emery at Villa Park.

Former Scotland defender Rachel Corsie, who played in the Women’s Super League for Aston Villa at the end of her career, told BBC Radio 5 Live: “Emery is quite unique. A lot of coaches focus on the tactical details but he is so intense at it.

“I remember when I was here his car was always on the training ground. I know people will say it’s a natural thing and the life of a manager, but I would say it’s an incredible time.

“He likes to get the details right. He never gets tired of trying to make people better individually and it takes an incredible amount of work. So many players come here and improve and flourish.”

Jackson previously played under Emery, having been coached by him at Villarreal, where he spent three years before Chelsea signed him for £35million.

Emery told BBC Match of the Day: “I knew him at Villarreal and he started playing at the level he is at today. I know his ability to exploit his qualities and I also know his humility.

“The mentality is coming through – how focused he is on his life and his professional career.”

Speaking to TNT Sports, Jackson added: “It’s not easy (moving to a new club) but easier thanks to the coach and the players.

“It’s an incredible dressing room with an incredible manager. I’m very happy to be here and I hope to score a lot of goals.”
