Laura Owens convicted in ‘Bachelor’ fake pregnancy scheme

Laura Owens, daughter of longtime Bay Area radio host Ronn Owens, was sentenced to prison Friday after admitting to a fake pregnancy plan involving former “Bachelor” star Clayton Echard and another man.

Judge Jeffrey Rueter handed down the sentence in the high-profile Arizona case in Maricopa County Superior Court in Phoenix. Owens, 36, will spend 30 days in the county jail, followed by seven years of probation.

“I know there are people who have suffered because of the decisions I made,” Owens said during the sentencing hearing. “I want to take responsibility for it, and they deserve to hear me do that.”

Owens pleaded guilty in August to four crimes related to a fabricated pregnancy, including two counts of fraudulent schemes and artifices, one count of perjury and one count of impersonation of another, according to court records.

The remaining 10 charges associated with the scheme were dismissed as part of the plea agreement.

Maricopa County authorities began investigating Owens in 2024 after she made several “inconsistent statements” during a paternity hearing involving Echard, according to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office.

She initially filed a lawsuit against Echard seeking child support from the reality TV star, then dropped her claim, alleging she suffered a miscarriage, the county attorney’s office said.

Investigators found that between May 2023 and June 2024, Owens altered an ultrasound, fabricated a pregnancy video and repeatedly lied under oath, Arizona authorities said. A grand jury indicted her on seven counts in May 2025.

Maricopa County prosecutors filed seven additional criminal charges six months later for similar allegations involving an Arizona man she briefly dated in 2021.

Owens could face an additional 12 years in prison if she violates probation, according to the sentence.

Owens is the daughter of Ronn Owens, who spent nearly five decades at San Francisco radio station KGO before retiring in 2021, and former KCBS reporter Jan Black, whose legal name is Elizabeth Naylor.
