Rep. Ilhan Omar allegedly appeared to refer to her father by a name similar to that of her estranged husband in a social media post that has been deleted for more than a decade — as federal investigators probe his identity and immigration records.
“Happy Father’s Day to my aabo Nur Said, I will be forever grateful to Allah for giving me the best father…” Omar wrote in June 2013, according to the Site web archive.
The Democratic congresswoman from Minnesota – who came to the United States as a refugee from Somalia in 1995 – deleted the message on the morning of September 19, 2019, Fox News reported.
However, several documents, including a 2020 Congressional Black Caucus memorial message, refer to the “Squad” member’s late father as “Nur Omar Mohamed.”
The name “Nur Said”, as stated in Omar’s since-deleted post, appears to be a name similar to that of her ex-husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi.
A decades-old claim claims that Omar married her brother when she married Said Elmi in 2009 because she was trying to get him a green card – which never came to fruition.
The since-deleted post, first reported by the Daily Caller in 2019, resurfaced after federal agents searched Omar’s Washington, D.C. home on October 12 as part of an ongoing criminal investigation into possible falsified statements on immigration and naturalization documents.
A motion filed Wednesday by the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, seeking to prevent the federal search warrant for Omar’s home from being unsealed, referred to the congresswoman as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, aka Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.”
The filing does not explain why the name appears in the document or establish that Omar used a false identity — and she told the publication Friday that her “real name” is “Ilhan Abdullahi Omar” and not “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi.”
Somali names typically consist of a person’s first name, their father’s first name and their paternal grandfather’s first name, according to the outlet, which noted that similarity between names alone does not establish a family relationship.
A previous statement, attributed to Omar’s spokesperson and circulated online, claimed that “Nur Said” was the childhood nickname of the MP’s father, the publication reported.
A spokeswoman for Omar called the allegations a “baseless and disgusting conspiracy theory,” in a statement to Fox News Digital on Thursday.
The statement also said Omar’s sanitized tweet was deleted because she and her family had received threats.
The congresswoman and her office have repeatedly denied accusations that her ex-husband is her brother.
In a recent interview with MS Now, Omar called allegations that she was married to her brother “crazy.”
When asked by host Chris Hayes if there was a “strange element of truth” to the marriage allegations, Omar replied: “Not that I’m aware of.”
Two people close to the investigation told Fox News Digital that “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi” could be Omar’s legal name — but his office disputed that characterization.
Omar divorced Said Elmi in 2017 and later legally married Ahmed Hirsi in 2018.
The Post has reached out to Omar’s office for comment.
