- Several top-seven teams, including Brigham Young and Texas Tech, suffered losses, leading to an upheaval in the Coaches Poll rankings.
- Brigham Young’s double-overtime loss to Central Florida was the most stunning upset of the weekend.
- Texas Tech is expected to fall from No. 5 to the bottom of the top 10 after a loss to Cincinnati.
While there is no change at No. 1, expect a bigger move toward the top of the U.S. LBM Coaches Poll after a weekend that saw losses from three top-seven teams.
In the most stunning result, Brigham Young lost in double overtime at Central Florida a week after beating Notre Dame to move into the top three.
Also in the Big 12, Texas Tech lost 37-24 in Cincinnati. Already viewed with skepticism due to a sluggish schedule, the Red Raiders could go from 5th place to out of the top 10.
And in the SEC, Ole Miss made a valiant comeback but lost 34-27 to Texas, which was able to avoid what could be a fatal defeat for its College Football Playoff hopes.
With some significant changes after the top three, here’s what the top 10 in this week’s coaches poll should look like:
1.Miami (7-0)
Malachi Toney may not be the best receiver in college football, but he’s probably the second best, as he showed again with a program-record 16 catches in Miami’s 52-23 win over Pittsburgh in the program’s first game at No. 1 since 2002.
2. Ohio State (6-1)
The Buckeyes might have needed a bye week after last Saturday’s grueling win over Indiana. As we’ve seen repeatedly in Power Four games this season and especially BYU, even top-ranked teams have a hard time avoiding disappointment after emotional wins.
3. Georgia (6-1)
After last week’s loss to Auburn, the Bulldogs won’t return home until facing Missouri on November 14. This Saturday will be the cocktail party (in Atlanta this year), followed by a trip to Oxford to face Ole Miss. Georgia will be the first of a few teams to climb at least one spot in this week’s top 10.
4. Indiana (7-1)
After escaping with a 13-6 overtime loss to Michigan, Indiana coach Curt Cignetti said quarterback Josh Hoover was dealing with an injury and operating at less than 100 percent. That would go some way to explaining a terrible day in the air, although Hoover struggled at times in Big Ten play.
5. Utah (7-0)
Even though it happened late Saturday night, Utah’s 21-13 win over Houston should impress voters waiting to see the Utes face a legitimate opponent. While he threw two interceptions, Devon Dampier ran for over 150 yards and two touchdowns.
6. BYU (6-1)
Theoretically, the Cougars can’t fall behind Notre Dame, who lost just once after last week’s win. While we’re not sure, let’s put our money on BYU to hold a spot ahead of the Irish despite a bad loss to a middling Big 12 team. That said, it would be strange to see a team that just lost to UCF still ranked in the top five.
7. Notre Dame (6-1)
The next big game is in two weeks against Miami. A loss to the Hurricanes could mean another year of playoff work, especially if the Cougars’ loss is a sign of things to come. The Irish could also earn a bye into the first round of the playoffs if they win.
8. UCLA (7-0)
The Bruins remained quietly undefeated with a very easy and neat 28-10 victory in their homecoming against Michigan State. UCLA gained 443 yards, allowed 156 and ran for 245 yards on 5.1 yards per carry. Even though the schedule isn’t great, the wins keep piling up.
9. Kentucky (7-1)
The best Power Four story this side of Westwood improved to 7-1 with a 34-17 win over Vanderbilt. Kentucky gave the Commodores a 10-0 advantage but dominated the deck between the end of the first half and the start of the second, taking a 21-10 lead and running away.
10. Texas Tech (6-1)
It will be a well-deserved drop for Tech but nothing too drastic, thanks to the Ole Miss loss. The Red Raiders made the loss to Cincinnati seem closer than it was with a pick-six and a pointless score with a minute remaining. There are still a lot of questions about whether this team is good enough to reach the Big 12 title game.
