Immediate reaction: Barcelona 1-2 Real Madrid

Barcelona 1-2 Real Madrid (Mbappé x2). A huge victory for Real Madrid… This is the immediate analysis of the late victory. Don’t forget to watch: player ratings, Mourinho quotes and a special El Clásico podcast.

The biggest game in the world was upon us and the toughest on Real Madrid’s schedule so far this season. Vinícius Júnior was suspended and Thibaut Courtois withdrew that morning due to the flu. This meant that Andriy Lunin and Yan Diomande were present, joined by Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham. Fede Valverde costumed the team for the Clásico.

A slower than usual start to a Clasico may have worked in Madrid’s favor – although Barcelona had the first decent chance of the game through Anthony Gordon. Kylian Mbappé would score the first goal, however, after Yan Diomande put the ball back into the box. The goal itself was really just a matter of right place, right time – like a clearance connecting with Kylian before flying into the goal. The Frenchman then hit the post from an offside position, before Diomande fired just wide as Madrid finished the first half strongly. 1-0 at the break.

The second half also started as Madrid wanted: slow and steady. Barcelona would, however, find the equalizer thanks to Raphinha. Arda Güler would try to fight back, before Andriy Lunin made a save that even the great Thibaut Courtois would struggle to imitate. As the hosts clawed their way back into the match, some incredible work from Eduardo Camavinga opened them up and allowed Kylian Mbappé to score his second goal late in the match. Barcelona looked slumped and Real Madrid managed to confirm their superb 2-1 victory. Is this the best performance of the season so far?
