James Gunn applauds criticism of continuity in his DCU

With the DCs clay face in theaters this weekend and Marvel’s Avengers: Apocalypse Rushing towards us, online users played compare/contrast.

A commenter apparently had questions about the connectivity between the DC Cinematic Universe projects created by James Gunn and Peter Safran. List of six recent projects – SupermanTHE Peacemaker series, Supergirlanimation Creature Commandos, clay face and the much-loved series Lanterns — the person being asked asks: “Where is this building heading?????? »

Reposting this comment on Threads, an account called Lostuslandcomics responded: “Gunn doesn’t need to build anything if the individual pieces work on their own…I think the MCU has reprogrammed people’s expectations.” »

Gunn commented over the weekend: “I couldn’t agree more. DCU is just an alternate universe; we can go into any place or time and tell THAT story. I don’t like the idea that individual stories only make sense if they lead to something else.”

The DC Studios co-CEO went on to point out that “Star Wars has been doing this for 50 years through movies, shows, games and books.” He added that his Superman saga – which continues with next year’s The man of tomorrow – “contains many characters that we have introduced in other stories. But that doesn’t mean that those other stories exist only to dramatize what happens in them.” (Marvel might argue that the term “only exists” is a bit reductive.)

He ended with, “I’d like people to see ‘Clayface’ because it’s a great, fun horror movie in its own right, not because of where Clayface is showing three movies from now.”

Here is Gunn’s full response:

I couldn’t agree more. DCU is just an alternate universe; we can walk into any place at any time and tell THIS story. I don’t like the idea that individual stories only have meaning if they lead to something else. People not understanding this seems strange to me, because Star Wars has been doing this for 50 years through movies, shows, games, and books, albeit without the tonal variety. This doesn’t mean there isn’t connectivity.

The Superman saga begins with Superman and travel in The man of tomorrow and beyond, and contains many characters we’ve introduced in other stories. But that doesn’t mean that these other stories only exist to describe what’s happening there. I’d like people to see “Clayface” because it’s an awesome and fun horror movie in its own right, not because of where Clayface will be showing three movies from now.
