I-5 reopens after RV crashes into WSP patrol car and WSDOT truck in Seattle

Two people were injured when an RV crashed into state vehicles with warning lights activated along southbound I-5.

SEATTLE — A Washington State Patrol (WSP) trooper and a passenger in an RV were injured Sunday morning when an RV struck a patrol car and a Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) truck on southbound Interstate 5 near State Route 520, according to WSP.

The accident occurred around 8:30 a.m. while the trooper and WSDOT were responding to a King County Metro bus that had broken down on a ramp. The WSDOT patrol car and truck’s warning lights activated when the camper struck them from behind.

The officer was inside the patrol car at the time and reported leg pain and a concussion, according to WSP.

The WSDOT driver was outside the truck and was not injured.

A passenger in the campervan suffered a broken ankle.

WSP Trooper Rick Johnson said the crash did not appear to involve criminal activity, but investigators believe the RV driver may not have been paying attention before the collision.

Johnson said this was the fifth accident involving a trooper this month and the second this week.

“It reminds us how dangerous it is and to make sure we stay vigilant, we have to pivot,” he said.

He said it’s a good reminder to slow down and move over if you see flashing lights on the road.

“I think we have some great laws in place to keep us safe. What we need is just for people to adhere to those laws,” Johnson said.

Southbound Interstate 5 reopened to traffic around 1 p.m. Sunday.
