Two people died and two others were injured when a suspected drunken driver collided with several cyclists who were taking a pre-Halloween night ride in San Bernardino County, Montclair police reported.
A group of about 30 cyclists were riding east on Kingsley Street around 10:39 p.m. Saturday when a driver heading in the opposite direction collided with several of them, according to a social media post from Montclair police.
One of the passengers was pronounced dead at the scene, while another died later in hospital, according to the police statement. A third victim was seriously injured and remained hospitalized; the individual was considered stable. A fourth person, who suffered a minor laceration to the head, refused further medical treatment.
The driver who collided with the bikers fled, but police, with the help of witnesses, were able to track down a suspect at his home near the scene of the collision, Montclair police said.
Police arrested Valentin Alberto Rodriguez, 38, on suspicion of driving under the influence, causing injury or death, hit-and-run, manslaughter and other crimes.
Authorities did not immediately identify the victims. Police said the cyclists organized their own ride, which was not sponsored by the city.
