Elon Musk’s AI film “The Odyssey” is rated as “Soulless Slop”

Elon Musk is probably relieved by filmmaker Alex Gibney’s highly critical four-hour documentary about the tech titan, Muskfailed at the box office and was almost entirely pulled from theaters after only one week of wide release.

But a new anti-wake version created by AI The Odyssey championed by Musk isn’t exactly a success either.

Musk, you’ll recall, repeatedly criticized Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster take on the material over the summer and teased a Grok-created version “historically accurate and true to the art of Homer” that would be coming to his social media platform

A critic for The telegraph wrote that the footage – made with AI specialists Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker – is “so unsettling that you can feel your eyeballs twitch at its sloppy horror… the glassy-eyed characters, with their expressionless voices, give the episode a zombie-like quality… Penelope looks completely different in every scene… a version of the story of Troy that deserves to be put to the sword, burned and hidden forever beneath the sands of time.

That said, the reviewer said the combat sequences “have some of the epic quality of Zack Snyder’s Spartan game.” 300.”

The top-voted viewer comment on X’s official post reads: “Damn, this is absolute shit… as expected.”

“Just soulless stupidity, without any thoughts or anything…” agreed another.

“It’s the Odyssey the flop predicted by Elon,” chimed another.

“The inability to effectively express emotions through high-quality voice acting, posture, and expression is distracting,” another wrote.

“This is definitely an example where writers and their creative talent are seriously underestimated,” said another. “The storyline seems flat and clichéd. No matter how pretty you make something look, there has to be substance to it.”

You have to scroll pretty far through the comments to find tempered praise: “There are some subtle little things that look ‘CGI’. However, overall it is very impressive! Looking forward to more episodes. It would be great to see the approach on the prompts, that’s for sure! »

To be fair, one suspects that if this video had been released a year ago, the responses would have been much more positive given the relative photographic realism of the images. The video is, to some extent, a sign of how quickly AI is evolving and how quickly viewers are becoming accustomed to its wonders, with this chapter being greeted with collective discord and a shrug of the shoulders.

As of Monday, the video had racked up 6.8 million impressions (which isn’t really too many given that a view can be triggered simply by scrolling through the video, not by watching it in its entirety).

Musk wrote several tweets earlier this year in an attempt to fuel a backlash against Nolan’s project. Odysseywriting in January that “Nolan lost his integrity” after seeing reports about the casting of Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy. He also agreed with a conservative commentator calling the director “cowardly” in May and tried to spark a conspiracy theory that Nolan only wanted various actors in the film to fulfill a requirement for Oscar inclusion.

Nolan’s film grossed over $1.78 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of his career.
