OpenAI upgrades ChatGPT and Codex with new GPT-6.1 Terra model

Earth is so back. Last month, when OpenAI released GPT-6 models of Sol and Luna, its medium Terra model was excluded from the update. OpenAI has now upgraded Terra from GPT-5.6 to GPT-6.1, touting the speed and computer usage at a lower price.

GPT-6.1 Terra is OpenAI’s new mid-size model that balances intelligence and affordability

OpenAI currently offers four main model classes, ranging from lowest to highest price and capabilities: Luna, Terra, Sol, and Astra.

The current version of the GPT-6.1 Terra model seems to be a great solution for getting more work done for longer without costing as much.

Here are the high-level details of the announcement:

We present GPT-6.1 Eartha fast, efficient model that combines detailed visual reasoning and precise computer use with clearer, more natural writing. A significant step up from GPT‑5.6 Terra, it excels at the communications and computing tasks that fill the workday, from writing proposals and interpreting technical drawings to filling out forms and editing videos.

OpenAI points out that the price of GPT-6.1 Terra is actually 50% lower than the lower version it replaces, GPT-5.6 Terra, making it ideal for automating IT work tasks at a lower cost.

In terms of intelligence and precision, OpenAI says Terra is a step forward in these areas as well:

On our internal benchmark of error-inducing prompts, the error rate with low reasoning effort fell from 53.6% with GPT-5.6 Terra to 16.7% with GPT-6.1 Terra, a drop of almost 37 percentage points. With maximum effort, the error rate decreased by 18 percentage points to 4.3%, almost matching the rates of GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.

The new GPT-6.1 Terra model is available today via ChatGPT Work, Codex and the API. You can learn a lot more about the new mid-size model here.
