Disney’s supernatural young adult series “Coven Academy” has been renewed for a second season.
Created by Tim Federle, the series follows “three teenage witches and their dangerously charming wizard peers at an elite magic boarding school where power is currency, secrets are deadly, and attraction is a liability,” according to the official diary, which continues: Caught between ancient supernatural wars and forbidden love interests, the coven must decide how far they are willing to go to protect their town – and themselves. The cast includes Malina Pauli Weissman, Malachi Barton, Jordan Leftwich, Ora Duplass, Louis Thresher, Tiffani Thiessen and Devon Sawa.
Season 1 is made up of 21 short “chapters,” nine of which premiered on Freeform on October 1. The rest of the season was released on Disney+ and Hulu the following day. “Coven Academy” was initially intended to be the first young adult series to air on Disney Channel, before moving alongside more mature content on Freeform and streaming.
According to Disney, Season 1 reached 20.3 million hours watched worldwide in its first three weeks of availability on Disney+ and Hulu. The first chapter of the season was also broadcast on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube, where it has been viewed more than 30 million times. According to Nielsen, “Coven Academy” was the most-watched streaming series among teens ages 12 to 17 in its debut weekend, and in the top five among all viewers in terms of views (as opposed to hours watched). Nielsen data also shows that the series was frequently viewed jointly, with half of viewers aged 12 to 17 and almost two-thirds of viewers aged 6 to 11 watching alongside an adult.
Federle executive produces “Coven Academy” alongside Darren Swimmer, Todd Slavkin, Amanda Row and Bronwyn North-Reist. The series is produced by Federle’s Chorus Boy Productions in association with Disney Kids & Family.
“I don’t want to tell yet another mommy mystery, but I think there’s something fun to explore in what makes a mother and daughter so dangerous when they’re together. And who would be most threatened by that?” Federle told Variety in an interview where he gives a detailed overview of his ideas for season 2.
