Apple’s iPhone Duo cracked screens days after its launch, sending its shares down 1% and leaving its $5 trillion market cap just $19 billion above the mark.
NVDA soared to $216, pushing its market cap to $5.215 billion and extending its lead over Apple to $196 billion.

Apple’s first foldable phone just arrived to customers and on October 26, 2026, the company admitted that some units were breaking at the fold.
24/7, Wall Street.
Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) has confirmed a defect in the interior foldable screen of the $1,999 iPhone Duo. The phone hit stores on October 23, after pre-orders sold out in minutes on October 16.
Shares fell 1.1%, or $3.81, to $343.91, then traded as high as $343.64 in after-hours trading. Part of that decline is due to a bearish note from Jefferies ahead of earnings and a reaction to a more expensive iPad mini, so the cracks add another drag to the pressure that already existed.
Apple is worth $5.019 trillion. That’s about $19 billion more than the $5 trillion mark above which it first closed on October 14, 2026, at $342.96 per share.
A decline of about 0.4%, to near $342.60, would clear that buffer. Apple remains above this level, although current risks are now enough to push it below.
What Apple admitted and what it left out
Apple’s statement read: “We are aware of an issue affecting the internal display of a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement.”
Bloomberg confirmed the issue with more than half a dozen customers through photos and support recordings. Apple did not give a unit count, cause, or timeline for a fix.

Owners describe a cracking sound when unfolding the phone, a crack along the center fold, and a white spot on the right side of the screen. Some of the crack photos circulating online appear to be AI-generated, making any tally harder to trust.
You don’t need AppleCare+ to get a replacement. However, stock is limited and some owners are still waiting, so the fix could turn into a supply issue in itself.
A precision hinge with a known stress point
iFixit gave the Duo a preliminary repairability rating of 5 out of 10, the best for a foldable. The teardown also revealed a stress hotspot where the curved crease of the screen presses on the central hinge support bar, near where breakages have been reported.
Kyle Wiens, who wrote the teardown, said that “a manufacturing deviation or a grain of sand can kill the fragile display panel” that the hinge protects. This is a theory and Apple has not confirmed it.
Out of warranty, Apple charges $999 to repair the interior screen. This price is why free replacement window is so important to every homeowner.
Why a thin cushion is important in this assessment
Dropping below $5 trillion would leave Apple’s cash flow unchanged, even if round numbers grab headlines and headlines drive short-term trading.
Apple trades at around 45 times earnings, with a free cash flow yield of 1.97%. Free cash flow yield is the cash generated by the company as a proportion of its market value. Such a high price assumes that new Apple product cycles continue to be successful.
iPhone revenue reached $54.25 billion in the third fiscal quarter of 2026, up from $44.58 billion a year earlier. The Duo was supposed to extend this period, so a default in its first week affected the growth story that investors are paying for.
Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) rose 2.39% to $216.00, bringing its value to $5.215 billion, about $196 billion more than Apple.
Apple also revealed a redesigned iPad mini with an 8.5-inch OLED display. It starts at $699, up from $599, and pre-orders open on October 28, the same day as Apple’s “Pro and tell” event in Los Angeles.
Apple reports its fourth quarter financial results after the close on November 2. Each date gives Apple the opportunity to name a cause and indicate how many units are affected.
What the Duo default means for Apple investors
Apple’s core business appears largely insulated from the problem. As noted, the defect affects a small number of units of a new model. The iPhone 17 lineup that drove fiscal 2026 growth is unaffected.
At $1,999, the Duo is a niche product within a much larger iPhone business, so even a complicated launch probably won’t significantly dent profits.
The biggest risk is if Apple remains silent. If the company comes to the Nov. 2 report without naming a cause or solution, a small defect becomes a question of whether high prices always buy higher reliability.

AAPL Analyst Ratings – 24/7 on Wall St.
If Apple closes below $342.60, stays there until the November 2 report, and still hasn’t said anything about the cause, the market is treating the defect as more than a minor problem, and that view would be wrong.
