Cheerios is giving its familiar cereal box an upgrade that could put an end to rolled up bags, cereal clips and stale O’s.

The General Mills brand has partnered with Ziploc to introduce Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal, a resealable bag placed inside a traditional cereal box.

The new packaging is designed to only partially open at the top, creating a pour spout that can then be closed to help keep the cereal fresh.

The change comes after years of consumers asking for an easier way to seal cereal bags, according to General Mills.

The company said Cheerios and Ziploc receive hundreds of thousands of requests, comments and feedback about cereal packaging each year.

A December 2025 survey by consumer insights platform Suzy found that 90% of cereal consumers take extra steps to preserve freshness after opening a box, including using tongs, clothespins and cereal containers.

“Cheerios with Ziploc PantrySeal eliminates a small daily cereal frustration and finally gives consumers the simple solution they’ve been asking for,” Emilie Knox, vice president and business unit manager for Cheerios at General Mills, said in a statement.

It’s a frustration that cereal fans have also expressed on social media.

“Why don’t grain companies use Ziploc bags?” asked a Reddit user in a 2024 post that received hundreds of upvotes.

Other users wonder why resealable packaging hasn’t become the standard for cereal.

“They could have done this 30 years ago. People have been asking for this for ages,” one Reddit user wrote earlier this year.

The new PantrySeal differs from a traditional Ziploc bag. Its zipper stops halfway across the top of the bag, leaving an opening designed for easy pouring and reduced spills.

The packaging will initially be offered as an option for the original Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios rather than replacing traditional bags in all boxes.
