In 2024, computer scientist Prof Dmitry Kobak, from Ghent University, searched more than a million biomedical research articles for the trigger words favored by LLMs that generate AI writing. His team found that as of December last year, almost 90% had AI fingerprints. AI detection technology is not perfect; some forms of software have referred to the U.S. Constitution, written in the 1780s, as “AI-generated.” But Kobak nonetheless said he was shocked by the scale of AI’s apparent use. There is a risk, he told Nature, that “whatever the LLM bias is, it will suddenly permeate the (scientific) literature.”
