Trump kills methane rule days after plume discovered near his rally

President Donald Trump On Tuesday, he withdrew regulations on a major global warming pollutant — just days after a satellite discovered a large plume of methane leaking from oil and gas wells near the campaign rally in Lubbock, Texas, where Asset made his announcement.

Governments and the private sector are deploying a wave of new technologies to locate methane leaks like never before. But this technological revolution is colliding with political decisions in the United States and Europe aimed at weakening regulations designed to curb the powerful engine of climate change.

“The methane problem” Asset said Tuesday evening. “I am officially ending Biden’s costly and unnecessary methane regulations to save energy consumers and producers $45 billion, unlock vast amounts of Texas natural gas, and produce 210 million barrels of oil.”

U.S. and European regulators have argued that methane rules should be scrapped or delayed because they threaten to raise the price and availability of energy, even as new technologies identify gas leaks — and bad actors — with remarkable accuracy.
