Israel exit polls show race headed for stalemate

Exit polls from major Israeli television networks predicted that a majority of Israelis voted against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition in Tuesday’s election, but his Likud party nevertheless emerged as the largest party among all candidates. Neither Netanyahu nor the opposition has a clear majority.

Although Netanyahu appears to have won fewer votes than his main opponent, early exit polls show the two candidates will likely struggle to put together a coalition.

Either would need to gain majority support in Israel’s 120-seat parliament, known as the Knesset, to form a government.

Israel’s two Arab parties won more seats in Parliament than in any previous election. The electoral success comes after what some Arab voters told CBS News was a difficult time for them in the country under Netanyahu’s far-right government, prompting historic turnout from the minority community.

Netanyahu and his opponents have vowed not to form a government dependent on Arab parties, arguing that it would put the country at risk if they gained enough seats to influence Israel’s engagement in its myriad conflicts. Arab citizens of Israel make up approximately 20% of the population.
