Nikolaj Coster-Waldau was forced to take shelter overnight in a metro station in Ukraine on Wednesday due to a threat of a Russian air raid.
The “Game of Thrones” alum, 56, is a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and visited the nation’s capital, Kyiv. He spent the night alongside residents sheltering amid a possible Russian missile and drone strike, amid the country’s war with Ukraine.
In photos obtained by Page Six, Coster-Waldau lies on a cot, wearing a blue UNDP hoodie, khaki cargo pants and black sneakers. He is also seen tense inside the metro, alongside other passengers.
The Danish actor was wearing a green backpack and carrying his own supplies in a black bag when he was later spotted walking near makeshift tents.
Coster-Waldau shared her experience on her Instagram Stories, noting: “I spent the night in the Kyiv metro. Quite a rough night.”
“I can do it one night and tell the story, but there are thousands of Ukrainians, it’s a necessity to be safe during the bombings,” he continued. “We must continue to help civilians and enforce the rules we all agree on. »
He then released a snapshot of air raid alerts in kyiv, which were at the red level for three consecutive days, from October 27 to 29.
In a video taken by Reuters, Coster-Waldeau said he was in Ukraine to raise awareness and make sure “people don’t forget that there is a country in need.”
“They are making remarkable progress, but they need help from the international community, especially as winter approaches,” he stressed.
Despite the circumstances, he seemed in good spirits as he lay on his bed, smiling as he tried to get comfortable.
Coster-Waldau is best known for playing Jamie Lannister on HBO’s “Game of Thrones” for eight seasons, from 2011 to 2019.
He was twice nominated for an Emmy in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series category for his performance, in 2018 and 2019.
He has been a UNDP Goodwill Ambassador since 2016, supporting causes such as climate action and gender equality.
