Robert Pattinson may be the star of Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” series, but another Caped Crusader will soon take flight in the rebooted DC Universe under the direction of James Gunn.
The head of DC Studios revealed some details about who will wear the mask in his new universe, launched last year with “Superman” starring David Corenswet. When Gunn and Peter Safran took the reins of DC Studios in 2022, they announced several films and shows in the world’s first chapter, such as “Superman,” “Supergirl,” “Lanterns” and “Clayface.” In addition to several other unreleased projects, they revealed a Batman movie called “The Brave and the Bold,” which would be separate from Pattinson’s hero in Reeves’ series.
In a preview video for “The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon? The Official Podcast,” set to be released Friday, Gunn shut down rumors that Batman is already cast, while also revealing the type of actor fans can expect.
“It won’t be long before we cast Batman. By the way, we haven’t cast yet – all the people thinking he’ll appear in this or that is just bullshit,” he said. “When we’ve decided on the Batman of the DCU, which isn’t too far off, if I gave someone a role in ‘The Suicide Squad’ who would be the best Batman, I wouldn’t rule them out. I want everyone to be considered. One of the things that excites me about casting Batman is being able to cast a Batman who is truly the best actor for that role. Supermans have always been cast based on who’s the best actor for that role. And for some reason, Batmans are always cast as movie stars.
When asked by “The Suicide Squad” actor Steve Agee if he should think about a Batman actor’s age when casting, given that “they’re going to be doing that in 10 years,” Gunn replied “definitely.”
“People are always looking for little clues about Batman casting,” Gunn said. “Basically, Batman and Superman are about the same age. I don’t think they’re radically different ages. They’re future best friends, contemporaries.”
To put the age of a potential Batman actor into perspective, “Superman” star Corenswet is 33 years old. A Batman in his thirties therefore seems likely. Corenswet will headline the next chapter of the DCU with next summer’s “Man of Tomorrow,” releasing July 9.
