Six people were injured, including four hospitalized, after a collision at a Halloween event outside a police station in Bushwick, Brooklyn, on Thursday afternoon, the New York Police Department said.
It happened shortly before 4 p.m. at an event on Knickerbocker Avenue near Bleecker Avenue. The location is home to the 83rd Precinct, which was hosting a “Trunk-or-Treat” party to hand out candy.
Police said Michael Marsh, 56, of Brooklyn, was drunk when he drove a black sedan on the sidewalk along Bleecker, hitting three adults and a child before hitting an ambulance parked outside the scene.
All those affected were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Marsh was charged with several charges, including driving while intoxicated, police said.
It was supposed to be a fun afternoon of Halloween celebrations, but it turned into a scary event for many families. The accident happened while the children were making treats. The ambulance was left with damage to its side.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene, saying the driver seemed to appear out of nowhere before crashing into the ambulance.
“We turn around, we just hear a noise. All the ambulance trucks pushed back, and then a lady was on the ground,” one person said.
“A little boy, I don’t know his age. One of the ladies dressed in a costume was handing out candy, and another girl, she looks like a teenager, but she was kind of under the car,” another person said of the injured people.
“The impact was brutal, hard, as if he had been pushed,” said a witness. “It’s also very traumatic that all these children had to go through this, especially my children.”
