Bochum bans fans from jumping in unison for fear of illness | Bochum

German club Bochum banned its supporters from jumping up and down in unison in part of its stadium because the movement of the stand made some spectators uncomfortable.

Engineers studied the structure as part of a modernization plan for the Ruhrstadion and checked its load capacity. Their report, however, also highlights the fact that synchronized jumping during matches created what they call a “trampoline effect” in the stands that could trigger discomfort in those who are not used to it.

The 2. Bundesliga club announced on Wednesday that from October 11, any synchronized movement in the East Stand area “would be prohibited”. The stadium has a capacity of approximately 26,000 seats.

“VfL regrets the unavoidable measures but is relieved that the East Stand can be used to full capacity, provided that the ban on jumping is respected,” read a statement. “Fortunately, the renovation of the East Stand is already part of the modernization project, which means that a lengthy planning process can be avoided and the ban on jumping can be lifted once the renovation work planned for 2028 is completed.”
