Scientists discovered a crocodile they didn’t know existed

In the millennia-old fossil record of the order Crocodylia, there has always been a group of crocodiles that made little geographic sense.

Scientists discovered one of these animals a century ago in a rock formation in the Mokattam Hills, southeast of Cairo – the same rock formation that was mined to build the Sphinx of Giza. The ancient reptile has been identified in historical records as belonging to the genus Tomistomethe “false gharial”.
