WWE isn’t messing around with tonight’s SmackDown main event, as the company apparently has a major championship match planned to close out the October 30 show. And with Crown Jewel around the corner, the outcome could have serious consequences.
According to Viper Reports, Sami Zayn’s undisputed WWE title defense against Trick Williams is currently scheduled to be the closing match on tonight’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown.
The match is listed in the early shots of the show, although WWE can always make changes before the live broadcast. For now, Zayn and Williams should win the final match of the evening.
That’s a pretty important spot for Williams, who was looking to get back into championship contention. Now he has the chance to fight for WWE’s biggest prize while closing out SmackDown just days before Crown Jewel.
Zayn, on the other hand, made things much more difficult for himself. Roman Reigns once questioned whether he would even make it to Crown Jewel with the Undisputed WWE Championship, but Zayn wasn’t really interested in playing it safe. Instead, he accepted challenges from anyone who was willing to step up. It almost backfired when Je’Von Evans pushed him over the edge on Raw, but Zayn managed to escape with his championship intact.
Now Williams has her chance, and WWE apparently thinks the match deserves the spot in the main event. If Williams can pull off the upset, it would completely change the championship picture heading into Crown Jewel, where Zayn is expected to face Reigns in a Champion vs. Champion match.
The rest of tonight’s show is also stacked. Chelsea Green will defend the WWE Women’s Championship against Nikki Bella, while Rey Fenix will put the AAA Cruiserweight World Championship on the line against Ricky Saints. Danhausen also presents its Halloween-themed “Very Nice, Very Evil SmackDown.” Cody Rhodes is currently scheduled to open tonight’s show, meaning WWE’s early plans call for Rhodes to start the show and Zayn vs. Williams to close it.
Nothing is final until the show actually airs, but current WWE programming has the WWE Undisputed Championship front and center for the closing match. As Crown Jewel approaches, Zayn has another opportunity to prove he can survive as champion – assuming Williams doesn’t screw it up.
