A search is underway for three armed men who broke into a mansion in Toronto, Canada, owned by a real estate CEO early Thursday morning and attacked and injured the family inside, authorities said.
The suspects, who were masked, forced the rear entrance of a five-bedroom home in the Bridle Path neighborhood around 3:40 a.m. local time, brandishing firearms and a hammer, Toronto police said.
Once inside, police said they went to the second floor of the home and confronted David Morton, 75, his wife, Doriana Morton, 64, and their two adult daughters, Maggie and Cristina.
“There was a demand for valuables inside the house,” Toronto Police Service Detective Kristy Smith told reporters. “It’s uncertain at this point whether or not they got away with anything.”
Police said MAC Group CEO David Morton and his daughters, aged 28 and 26, tried to fight off the intruders when shots were fired.
All three suffered gunshot wounds, Smith revealed. And in a separate statement Friday, David Morton said the four family members were also attacked by the suspects with a hammer.
David Morton said he and his two daughters remained hospitalized Friday with gunshot wounds, but he did not provide details about their conditions.
“What should have been the safety and security of our own home became a terrifying and life-threatening experience,” David Morton said in his statement. “…It’s difficult to put into words the trauma of experiencing something so horrific in the one place everyone should feel safest: their own home.”
The three suspects, aged in their 20s and wearing dark clothing, fled the scene in an SUV, police said.
“All these houses are well secured,” said Cecil Hawkins, a former Bridle Path resident. “So I’m a little surprised. Shooting people in the house, that seems mind-boggling.”
According to Toronto police, there have been 119 home invasions so far in 2026, an increase of 32.2 per cent compared to the same period last year.
Thursday’s home invasion took place in the same neighborhood where a mansion owned by rapper Drake was the target of multiple break-in attempts in May 2024. A Drake security guard was also injured during a shooting outside the house at that time.
