As Taika Waititi’s latest directorial effort hits the sun, he has some choice words for the critics who try to rain on his parade.
On Saturday, the Oscar winner bragged about Klara and the sunRotten Tomatoes audience score of 78% (now at 73%), while lambasting the “sad lost souls” who gave the film a negative review, contributing to its 26% review rating.
“I haven’t read a review of anything aimed at me or my peers in almost 15 years. But I listen to people,” he prefaced on Instagram.
“So this Halloween, let’s spare a thought for those sad lost souls who couldn’t realize their dream of becoming artists and therefore became critics. The same people who also hated Jojo Rabbit“, Waititi added. “Irrelevant. Disconnected. Obsolete. In the trash.
In Deadline’s review, Damon White wrote of the Sony Pictures adaptation: “Taiki Waititi should be a perfect fit for Kazuo Ishiguro’s dystopian novel – or is it? – 2021, given the director’s affinity for a very particular, particular type of gritty reality-based comedy. But Klara simply doesn’t deliver on any front.”
Meanwhile, Waititi might have flown too close to the sun with the reported $20 million budget for the film, which opened last weekend to $701,000 domestic. Following negative reviews from BFI this month, Sony reduced the film’s release to 880 theaters in the United States.
Based on Kazuo Ishiguro’s 2021 dystopian novel, Klara and the Sun stars Jenna Ortega as the titular android, who is purchased as an “artificial friend” for seriously ill teenager Josie (Mia Tharia), whose family is mourning the death of her older sister Sal.
