Daylight saving time ends tonight. Here’s When to Set Your Clocks

Daylight saving time officially ends before dawn on Sunday. The clock goes back an hour at 2 a.m. on November 1, which means people sleep an extra hour.

This also means that there will now be more light in the morning and it will be dark earlier in the evening.

Most cell phones make the change automatically. People with an analog clock must manually set it one hour earlier.

While many will appreciate the extra sleep, others might have hoped that we would have already seen the end of this biannual clock changing practice. Daylight saving time was first adopted in the United States through the Standard Time Act of 1918. Many efforts over the years have sought to end it.

A bill moving through Congress, called the Sunshine Protection Act, revives efforts to make daylight saving time permanent, although it is unlikely to pass this year. Under the proposal, clocks would go forward an hour in March as they normally do, but then stay there indefinitely, meaning later sunrises and more evening daylight in winter.

Advocates say this would help maximize daylight hours for after-work and school activities. President Trump has pushed for the change and earlier this month urged Arkansas residents to call what he said was the personal cell phone of Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark), who opposed the bill on the grounds that it would mean children would go to school in the dark.

Others, including sleep scientists and doctors, have proposed making standard time permanent rather than daylight saving time, saying the move would be better for sleep cycles and reduce health risks. Other research has shown that permanent daylight saving time could lead to more vehicle collisions with pedestrians due to darker morning commutes.

States have long had the ability to turn off DST with Congressional approval, although most of the United States observes it. Hawaii, most of Arizona, and the U.S. territories do not change clocks.

Californians voted in 2018 to allow lawmakers to end DST, but since then several efforts to implement the change have failed.

Daylight saving time starts again on March 14, 2027.
