Binance resumes withdrawals from some major cryptocurrencies after $6 billion heist

Binance said on Sunday it had resumed withdrawals from some major cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereal after more than $6 billion in assets were stolen from the cryptocurrency exchange.

Binance is the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange by daily trading volumes. News of the hacking attack, considered the largest on record cryptocurrency heist, sent prices of most major cryptocurrencies tumbling on Friday.

However, the company assured that it would cover 90% of the losses resulting from the attack by using company funds to purchase tokens to replenish much of what was stolen.

Binance suspended user withdrawals after the attack, but said they would resume in phases, the first of which began on Sunday.

“The first batch network is now open in the first phase of withdrawals,” the exchange posted on X.

As of 5 a.m. Eastern, Binance said it had restored withdrawals for Bitcoin, Ethereal, BNB, XRP, Base, Doge, and Optimism, and would “continue to restore additional assets and networks in stages as security reviews are completed.”

The FBI accused North Korea of being behind the hack in a statement released Saturday, confirming earlier suspicions by private investigators and analysts that a Pyongyang-affiliated group called TraderTraitor was responsible.

TraderTraitor is the same group accused of a $1.5 billion theft from the Bybit platform in February last year.

“The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is releasing information indicating that the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) was responsible for the theft of more than $6 billion in virtual assets from the Binance cryptocurrency exchange on or about October 29, 2026,” the statement said.

The FBI added that it observed “TraderTraitor actors” converting stolen assets into Ethereum and expected these assets to be further laundered by converting them using decentralized finance and instant exchange services.

It said it was urging private sector entities “to block transactions with or derived from the addresses that TraderTraitor actors use to launder these stolen assets.”
