Michigan Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens on Sunday, in a surprising move, endorsed Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers over Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed.

Stevens lost the Democratic primary to El-Sayed earlier this year.

His support for Rogers came after days of growing tensions with El-Sayed and his campaign over a political action committee ad.

“Hey Michigan, as you may have seen, our Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, Abdul, said I was no longer welcome in his campaign and should stay away, and he’s right,” Stevens said in a video statement on X.

“And that’s why I’m endorsing Mike Rogers for U.S. Senate today,” she said.

“I do not belong to Abdul’s campaign. I do not stand with Hasan Piker, who is being trafficked on our college campuses,” Stevens said.

Piker is a controversial political commentator who campaigned alongside El-Sayed.

“I’m sorry people are upset,” Stevens told reporters at a news conference in Detroit as she stood alongside Rogers, with whom she attended church Sunday morning.

“I understand that,” she said.

Rogers and El-Sayed are vying for a seat that will become vacant due to Democratic Sen. Gary Peters’ decision not to run again.
