At a time when some believe the Eagles are in dire straits, their subtle effort to secure a better round-by-round draft position in 2027 won’t include getting an extra draft pick or two for running back Saquon Barkley.
NFL Network reports that the Eagles I wouldn’t trade Barkley before the deadline of November 10.
It is clear, unequivocal. The Eagles don’t play the “no projects“, as the Raiders are with Maxx Crosby. The Eagles, based on the report, move forward with Barkley.
Of course, releasing the report nine days before the deadline could indicate that the Eagles realized there was no offer coming that would cause them to accept a $26 million dead money charge for Barkley in 2027.
The Eagles already traded a veteran player when Cam Jurgens was dealt to the Ravens following Lane Johnson’s surprise retirement. That doesn’t mean the Eagles will hold a Colts-style fire sale — especially when it comes to any contract that, if negotiated, would pour jet fuel on the cap situation next year.
Given the cap implications, it would make much more sense to trade Barkley after June 1, 2027. Like they did when trading receiver AJ Brown after June 1, 2026.
The move followed months of reports, claims and assertions that they would not trade Brown. So, yes, it will make perfect sense to pay attention to any chatter that might emerge during the offseason, leading up to a possible June 1 trade if the Eagles believe 2027 could also prove to be another soft tank season.
