US President Donald Trump approved El Salvador’s decision to send troops to Haiti, while President Nayib Bukele threatened to “teach the gangs a lesson” after the disappearance of four Salvadorans serving with UN forces there.
As many as 2,000 Salvadoran troops are deployed – a number that could double or triple, Axios reported. Bukele, who reduced El Salvador’s homicide rate through a draconian crackdown, is pioneering a “new form of intervention, more direct and less constrained by multilateral rules,” an expert told the New York Times.
This could make the country’s gang crisis even deadlier: “The overall security situation is not pointing towards stabilization,” an expert at the Council on Foreign Relations told Reuters. “This suggests an escalation.”
