Odell Beckham Jr. takes JJ McCarthy’s Old Vikings jersey number after practice squad deal

There is a new number 9 on the Minnesota Vikings.

Veteran wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. will wear No. 9 after signing to the Vikings’ practice squad on Wednesday.

The number 9 was most recently worn in Minnesota by quarterback JJ McCarthy, who was traded to the Giants on September 28. McCarthy wears number 18 with his new team.

Beckham opened the season with the Giants before being released by the team on September 29.

He played 19 offensive snaps and received three targets with no catches before being released. Head coach John Harbaugh said that after his departure, the Giants didn’t “get enough” from the veteran wideout.

Beckham began his NFL career wearing number 13 while recording three consecutive Pro Bowl campaigns with the Giants.

He also wore number 13 after joining the Cleveland Browns before later donning number 3 with the Los Angeles Rams, Baltimore Ravens and Miami Dolphins.

Beckham last saw regular season action in the NFL for the Dolphins before being waived by the team in December 2024. He missed the 2025 season after starting the campaign with a PED suspension.

He made his return to the NFL this offseason with the Giants, wearing No. 3 during training camp and the preseason before switching to No. 13 before his return to the regular season.

Quarterback Jake Haener wears number 13 with the Giants following Beckham’s release.

The Vikings already had wide receiver Tai Felton wearing number 13, while star Jordan Addison claimed number 3.

Beckham now hopes his new number coincides with another chance in the NFL as he looks to earn more snaps during the season.
