Parts of Florida receive six months’ worth of rain in 36 hours

According to radar estimates, about six months of rain – up to 28 inches – fell on parts of Florida’s Space Coast in just a day and a half, from Sunday afternoon to Monday evening.

“I have NEVER seen anything like this,” Tampa-based meteorologist Jeff Berardelli wrote of the event, which was so rare that it had a recurrence interval of more than 1 in 1,000 years in some areas — and it could be a sign of what’s to come as the state prepares for an unusually active winter thanks to El Niño.
