Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel died on Tuesday following an on-field collision during Monday’s match, the team announced. He was 30 years old.
In the final seconds of Tenerife’s match against Andorra, de Miguel was involved in a brutal collision with Andorran goalkeeper Jesús Owono in midfield.

Owono immediately received a red card and began to leave the field. De Miguel first lay down with his head and knees on the grass before turning onto his back. He then became immobile, causing an opposing player to immediately call for help on the sidelines. Once Owono realized the seriousness of the situation, he stopped leaving the field and turned around to check on Miguel. Owono faces suspension for the collision.
Additionally, Spanish police have reportedly opened an investigation into the situation regarding a possible manslaughter charge, according to ABC News.
The match did not continue after the incident. The match was tied 2-2 when play was suspended. De Miguel was transferred to hospital and was initially deemed “stable despite the severity of his condition”, Tenerife said in a statement after the match. Later in the day, however, the team said Miguel’s condition had “worsened neurologically.”
On Tuesday morning, Tenerife announced the death of Miguel. The team’s statement, translated from Spanish to English, reads:
