King describes the slave trade as a ‘shameful chapter’ that ‘fills my heart with horror’ in his Commonwealth speech

King discusses ‘crisis of our times’ at Commonwealth summitpublished at 15:11 GMT

The king speaks of the “brutal conflicts” facing the world and calls climate change a “catastrophic reality”, which leaves nature under constant attack.

He also says technology is transforming societies and economies “at breakneck speed,” with little certainty about where it will take us.

Together, these challenges “constitute the crisis of our time,” continues the King.

The King then states that although the Commonwealth cannot provide all the solutions required, it nevertheless offers the opportunity to work together.

The monarch says this Chogm’s theme, accelerating partnerships and investment for a prosperous Commonwealth, represents a “vital opportunity” for us all.

Regarding climate change, he adds that large oceanic states have contributed little to the effects of climate change but are among those bearing the “highest costs”.

He says he looks forward to hearing how Commonwealth leaders are working with others, such as the private sector, on innovative proposals to combat climate change.
