One of the best horror films of the year is finally back, even if it’s a little too late for Halloween. Zach Cregger Resident Evil, the reimagining of the hit franchise that has grossed over $400 million worldwide is now available for digital download. So you can buy or rent it now, wherever you want.
Released in mid-September, the film stars Austin Abrams as a young medical courier tasked with one last job on a cold, snowy night. What he doesn’t know is that something has broken containment in a nearby lab, and he’ll have to survive the next few hours fighting all sorts of disgusting creatures to not only stay alive, but deliver the package.
Cregger’s approach to the hit video game franchise, which had already spawned seven films before he was filmed, was to go back to basics. He wanted to put the fans in the mind of a resident Evil player. Someone slowly moves through an increasingly frightening and aggressive world, upgrading their weapons and items along the way. And, in this aim, he was very successful. Some die-hard fans of the franchise didn’t like that the film was so tangential to the series’ history, but $400 million later, Cregger’s film is by far the highest-grossing film in the franchise. So it seems like a lot of people liked it and told a friend.
To commemorate the film’s return home, Fandango has released the first few minutes of the film, which you can check out below. It’s a great way to get yourself back into that manic state of mind before watching resident Evil again or for the first time.
