Democratic candidates are ahead in all four Texas Supreme Court races in Tuesday’s voting, potentially breaking Republicans’ total control of the state’s highest civil court.
All nine sitting justices on the Texas Supreme Court are Republicans, and four seats are up for election this year, including chief justice.
Democrat Maggie Ellis leads Republican Chief Justice Jimmy Blacklock, while Democrat Chari Kelly leads Republican Justice James Sullivan in the race for second place.
In the other two races, Democrat Kristen Hawkins leads Republican Judge Kyle Hawkins for place 7, while Democrat Gisela Triana leads Republican Judge Bretty Busby for place 8.
The Texas Supreme Court handles civil and juvenile cases, including cases involving state laws, government actions, and other legal disputes.
If Democrats win all four races, Republicans would maintain a narrow 5-4 majority on the court’s nine members.
The counting of votes continues and the results do not constitute the expected victories.
