Cher Reacts to Michael Douglas Shading Her 1988 Oscar Win Over Glenn Close

Close can speak optimistically about it now, but when she was first asked to return to filming the end of Fatal attractionsix months after they were packed, she refused.

“I fought for two weeks,” she told New York Times. “It was going to turn a character I loved into a murderous psychopath. I was in a meeting with Michael, Stanley and Adrian. I was furious! I said to Michael, ‘How would you feel if that was your character?’ He said, ‘Baby, I’m a whore.'”

In fact, he did what those who paid him told him to do. “Yes, I said something to that effect,” Douglas admitted.

But even though Close held out the longest, she wasn’t the only one who resisted: Lyne didn’t want to do it either, saying it was tantamount to giving in to the “lowest common denominator,” said Lansing (who agreed with the director). The filmmakers were ultimately offered $1.5 million for a reshoot and the promise that if they didn’t like the result, they wouldn’t have to use it.

Archer, for her part, liked the original ending and the performance she gave in it. “I burst into tears,” she told Galloway. “My whole life, my career and my heart wore on my sleeve.”
