Washington- Republican Sen. Pete Ricketts won re-election in Nebraska’s Senate race, according to CBS News, fending off a challenge from independent Dan Osborn.
Ricketts, 62, is a former Nebraska governor appointed to the Senate in 2023. He faced Osborn, a former union leader who was making his second Senate run.
Osborn, 51, lost by seven points to Republican Sen. Deb Fischer in 2024. And as Democrats again paved the way for him this cycle, he tried to oust Ricketts in the conservative state.
Nebraskans haven’t elected a candidate who wasn’t Republican since 2006. But with a significant share of nonpartisan voters and an unfavorable environment for the Republican Party, amid an unpopular war with Iran and high gasoline and diesel prices, the race turned out to be a victory.
competitive.
Although Osborn has said he would not have caucused with Democrats, Ricketts’ projected victory avoids an outcome that could have further damaged their majority. And after a series of Democratic victories in states that the president won handily in 2024, retaining the Nebraska seat comes as a relief for the GOP.
