Florida Governor Ron DeSantis – a former 2024 Republican presidential candidate and potential 2028 presidential candidate – predicted last night that the seismic impacts of Democratic congressional victories would reverberate well beyond the rest of President Donald Trump’s presidency.
“Looking at the Senate map and given such a large margin in the House, it is very unlikely that Republicans will take back Congress in 2028. They may not have the opportunity to take control of the Senate until 2032,” DeSantis said in an article on X.
DeSantis, who failed to run against Trump in 2024, said Republicans underestimated the impact of high gas prices due to the war in Iran — without specifically naming Trump.
“Some of these Republicans say, ‘Oh, well, gas, don’t worry, da, da, da, it’s no big deal.’ Or they’re trying to blame Biden. No, no. Look, we just have to be honest. The gas is higher. This hurts people, the working class, and it is even more serious because of the Iranian conflict. That’s just the fact. If you can’t admit that to voters, then you’re confusing them and they’re not going to listen to you on other issues,” DeSantis said on Stephen A. Smith’s “Straight Shooter” podcast Monday.
A former Trump official said last night’s outcome was “much worse than anyone could have expected.”
“The breakup of the GOP as we know it now,” the ex-official told CNN. “The House is gone until at least 2030, the Senate until 2032. JD Vance bids farewell to 2028.”
Vance tried to keep his tone on the campaign trail, acknowledging that gas prices were high — but Trump took a different tack, telling voters it was a small price to pay to ensure that Iran would not have a nuclear weapon.
