Image source, EPABefore the midterm elections, many Democrats – and some Republicans – had expressed concern about the renewal of the US military against Iran.
The midterm elections were a resounding rebuke of Trump’s Iran policy, and even he has acknowledged that concerns about high gasoline prices may have played a role — although he has so far refused to take any responsibility for Republican candidates’ losses in each election.
Trump has repeatedly left open the possibility that further strikes would necessarily, potentially, be against “Pickaxe Mountain,” one of the few sites associated with Iran’s nuclear program that was not struck during Operation Epic Fury earlier this year.
In a phone interview with Politico, Trump again hinted that something might happen.
“We’re going to take a look at it, and if we see an opportunity to do one thing or another, we’ll do what’s best for this country,” he said.
A return to large-scale operations in Iran would be unpopular with most Americans.
Trump, however, ignored that his choice to go to Iran was the wrong one.
“I am completely convinced that my decision regarding Iran, for the long-term good of our country and indeed the world, was absolutely correct,” he said. “And it continues to be.”
