Hannah Einbinder made good on her promise to debut Michigan Rep. Haley Stevens if Abdul El-Sayed wins the state Senate race Tuesday night.
Watching the midterm results roll in from a bar, the “Hacks” star quickly posted a video of his impression of Stevens after El-Sayed’s victory. “We’re going to give them a little energy, a little powder, a little stick, because that’s the Michigan way!” she said in the clip, shared on her Instagram Story. In a later article, Einbinder celebrated the victory, writing: “Mazel tov, Abdul.”
El-Sayed defeated Mike Rogers in Michigan’s closely watched Senate race, becoming the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate. His victory came as Democrats secured control of both houses of Congress in Tuesday’s midterms.
The results capped a tumultuous week that began Sunday when Stevens, who narrowly lost Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary to El-Sayed in August, announced she would instead support her Republican opponent.
Stevens later appeared on CNN for an interview with Anderson Cooper, who repeatedly questioned what caused the sudden turnaround. His bizarre behavior and responses quickly circulated online, providing fresh material for late-night hosts including Seth Meyers and Jon Stewart.
His decision also drew immediate criticism from Michigan Democratic leaders, including party Chairman Curtis Hertel, while several members of his congressional staff resigned in protest. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer also condemned the approval.
Elsewhere in the midterm race, James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton in Texas, while Democrats also picked up Senate seats in Iowa and Kansas. In Maine, Democrat Troy Jackson unseated longtime Republican Sen. Susan Collins.
Democrats also flipped the governorships of Texas, Iowa, Ohio and Georgia.
