Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk has taken a major step toward returning to the field.
Aiyuk’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that his client filed for reinstatement from the 49ers’ left reserve/squad roster. Rosenhaus also said Aiyuk plans to report to the 49ers facility this week.
“Brandon is healthy and ready to get back on the field,” Rosenhaus said.
Aiyuk landed on the roster due to a lengthy standoff with the 49ers over how he chose to rehab his 2024 knee injury and that included the 49ers’ decision to void the remaining guarantees on his contract. The 49ers said Aiyuk would never play for the team again, leaving them with the choice of whether to trade him or release him once Aiyuk’s reinstatement is processed and he reports to the team. Previous attempts to trade him have not been successful, so a release could be the most likely outcome.
