Kim Kardashian says she’s waiting for ‘some time off’ to retake the bar exam after failing last year

Kim Kardashian is considering retaking the California bar exam. At the November 2 premiere Everything is fair in New York, she told People she wanted to wait until she had “a little free time to focus on it.” She has not announced a date for her next attempt.

Kardashian plays divorce lawyer Allura Grant in the Hulu drama. His co-star Sarah Paulson, standing alongside him on the red carpet, made a prediction about his off-screen prospects. “She’s going to be a great lawyer,” Paulson said. “She will.”

Kardashian, 46, has four children, runs SKIMS and films her family’s reality series, The Kardashians. His latest projects also include The fifth wheela Netflix comedy that she produces and in which she stars for director Eva Longoria.

She has a particular type of legal work in mind. On The Graham Norton Show in October 2025, while she was still waiting for her results, Kardashian imagined what she might be doing in 10 years. She could see herself moving away from reality TV to work as a trial lawyer.

Why Kardashian Announced Her Bar Exam Score Herself

Kardashian took the comprehensive California bar exam over two days in July 2025. She learned Friday, Nov. 7, that she didn’t pass. California was expected to release the names of the deceased on Sunday. As she later told Time, she wanted people to hear her news first.

On Saturday, she posted the result on Instagram Stories. She said she was close to passing, although she kept the score to herself. Before taking the exam, she had thought she would have the time and energy to try it once. “But the next day I started studying again and I didn’t stop,” she told Complex.

The Baby Bar took Kardashian four attempts

Kardashian began a legal apprenticeship in 2018, the year she met with President Donald Trump on behalf of Alice Marie Johnson. Johnson had spent nearly 22 years in federal prison when Trump commuted his life sentence in June. Kardashian later told Vogue that she could explain the human cost of a sentence in these meetings, but that she deferred to the lawyers at her side on the legal details. She wanted to be able to do both.

By the time she announced her plans in April 2019, Kardashian had traveled to San Francisco to study with attorneys Jessica Jackson and Erin Haney. The State Bar of California requires four years of supervised legal study as part of its law office curriculum. One of the bumps in the way was the first-year law student exam, better known as the baby bar.

After three failed attempts, Kardashian passed the October 2021 exam and shared the news in December. She said her late father, Robert Kardashian, who served on OJ Simpson’s defense team, would have been her best study partner. She celebrated the end of her apprenticeship in May 2025, two months before sitting at the full bar.

All’s Fair Gives Allura Grant Her Own Bar Exam Story

Season 2 of Ryan Murphy’s legal drama opened on November 4 with three episodes on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers. Allura returns to Grant, Ronson & Greene with her partners Liberty Ronson (Naomi Watts) and Emerald Greene (Niecy Nash-Betts). The eight-episode season will run through December 2, according to Disney+.

The trailer gives Kardashian a line that might as well have appeared in the premiere. Allura asks Milan, played by Teyana Taylor, if she just passed the California bar. “Guilty as charged,” Milan responds. Allura tells him, “I didn’t succeed on my first try.”
