Conservatives stunned by ‘catastrophic’ midterm blue wave, blame Trump’s Iran war and high gas prices
Conservatives were stunned Tuesday by the results of the 2026 midterm elections and are trying to adapt to the new political landscape.
Democrats dominated in both red and blue states, easily taking back the House and Senate, and flipping several governorships. Democrats scored victories in many states won by President Donald Trump in 2024, including seemingly red places like Texas, South Carolina and Kansas.
Members of the conservative media were stunned by these crushing defeats.
“It’s a catastrophic evening for the Republicans,” Washington Examiner columnist Guy Benson responded on Fox.
“Sometimes you get kicked on the backside, and you deserve it. Tonight is one of those moments for the Republican Party,” conservative radio host Buck Sexton responded to the results on
“Most of the Republican candidates this cycle were uninspiring, lazy and completely ineffective communicators. I’m not at all surprised by some of these results,” said Trump adviser Alex Bruesewitz.
“(Trump) picked a bunch of bad candidates,” commentator Mary Katharine Ham wrote on X of losing candidates.
Many have pointed the finger at Trump, the war with Iran and soaring gas prices as responsible for his party’s devastating losses.
“Trump started an unpopular and unnecessary war. Gas prices are too high. People can’t afford groceries. Trump has abandoned the America First message. This is why Republicans are being crushed. It’s very simple,” wrote Matt Walsh of the Daily Wire.
“This will be the biggest national wipeout for Republicans since 2006, when voters brutally punished the Republican Party for an ill-advised and poorly planned war in the Middle East,” Federalist Party co-founder Sean Davis said.
