TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Democrats were hoping a “blue wave” would wash over Republicans in the Sunshine State Tuesday night.
They only had a trickle left.
Republicans won the governor’s seat, swept the state Cabinet, retained their seats in the U.S. Senate and maintained their power in the Legislature. Still, Democrats posted their best performance in years, winning several redrawn congressional districts earlier this year in a governor-led effort. Ron DeSantiswhich, GOP officials hoped, would bring Republicans four congressional seats — and break the Republican supermajority that has ruled the Florida House in Tallahassee for the past four years.
While Republicans scored victories, headlined by Rep. Byron Donalds securing the governor’s race against the Democrat David Jolythey won by significantly tighter margins compared to 2024.
