Gossip is one of the oldest family pastimes, but it rarely remains harmless.
A woman was having dinner with her family when the conversation turned to two women they knew who wore eyelash extensions and had cosmetic surgery.
The comments quickly turned cruel, with those close to her calling the woman ugly and cartoonish.
The woman tried to ignore her at first, but eventually she told them to stop talking bad about people they didn’t even know.
Her family insisted she did nothing wrong and said she was free to say whatever she wanted.
By the end of the night, she was being called a bad person for standing up for women. Then his mother made the situation worse by giving him a disturbing ultimatum.

So I was having dinner with my family when, out of nowhere, they started talking about two women they know who have eyelashes and who have had cosmetic surgeries.
At first I ignored it, although I think it’s wrong to talk about someone else’s body and face.
His family’s comments became increasingly rude.
At some point it started to get annoying, because they were saying really horrible things about them (like that they looked like cartoons and thought they were ugly).
Ultimately, she decides to defend these poor strangers – and her family immediately goes on the defensive.
I told them they should stop talking bad about someone they don’t even know, and they said no.
I kept trying to tell them why it wasn’t right, but then they started saying they had the freedom to talk about whatever they wanted because they were free.
Then his family started placing all the blame on him and gave him a pretty disturbing ultimatum.
At the end of the conversation, they basically told me I was a bad person because I was angry with them because of it. My mother told me not to do this again or they wouldn’t clean the mold in my room (which affects me due to asthma).
I don’t feel like I did anything wrong by telling them not to talk about it, but I don’t know, now I feel a little bad.
AITA?? Did they have the right to talk about these women that way??
This family doesn’t seem like the nicest people to ever live on Earth.

This user condemns the family’s behavior in the strongest possible terms.

This woman had more decency at the table than the rest of her family combined. Two strangers were being mocked for their faces, and she was the only person willing to say it was wrong. It took courage, especially when it was his own loved ones who were laughing.
But in the end, the real problem was his mother’s threat about mold. Threatening someone’s health turns an already problematic story into something completely indefensible
Speaking out was not a mistake. The threat was.
