Rep. Robert Garcia, the new House Oversight chairman, outlines four planned investigations into the Trump administration.

Huntington Beach (KABC) — In a two-word statement released Tuesday evening after Democrats took control of the House, Rep. Robert Garcia, presumptive chairman of the House Oversight Committee, said, “Attorney stand.”

On Wednesday, he expanded on that terse statement during a news conference in Huntington Beach, part of the district he will represent in the next Congress.

“We need to be very clear that the American people have spoken loud and clear: They want change,” Garcia told reporters. “They are fed up with the destruction and corruption of Donald Trump and this administration.”

Garcia pointed to Democrats’ electoral victories nationally as a mandate. He said the Oversight Committee will focus on four areas.

“The first is: We are going to take on the Trump crime family,” Garcia said. “The scale of scams and corruption is unprecedented in American politics.”

Garcia is expected to seek to question Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, as well as other members of the Trump family about their alleged business dealings.

“Our second investigation focuses on DHS and ICE abuses,” the congressman said, referring to the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. “What we’re seeing on the streets – across the country, but I’m talking about California – whether it’s here in Orange County, in Long Beach, in Los Angeles.

“When people are kidnapped and detained, thrown to the ground, their arms broken, people arrested on their way to immigration appointments that the government gave them – it’s inhumane, it’s wrong, and I think the American public – regardless of party – has had enough.

Garcia said he plans to investigate corporate donors to the White House Ballroom, no-bid contracts like contractor Reflecting Pool and companies he says are “ripping off” the American public.

“While you’re struggling, CEOs and companies across the country are making record profits,” he said. “They are putting price monitoring systems in place, so when you go to the supermarket you may be paying a different price to your neighbor.”

Regarding the Epstein investigation, Garcia said he wants to hold public hearings, which would replace the interviews that took place behind closed doors when Republicans were in power.

Garcia, whose congressional district includes parts of Long Beach, Huntington Beach, Costa Mesa, Santa Ana, Seal Beach and Newport Beach, said he is “proud to represent all of Orange County.”

He added: “I just want to be very clear that the days of Huntington Beach being a MAGA town are over. It’s a diverse community, which – as I’ve knocked on doors, people just want good services, people want good representation, and I’m excited to represent the entire community.

“It’s clear that this city voted for change, the county voted for change, and we look forward to making that change and focusing on the issues that people here care about: protecting the coast, investing in infrastructure, treating people with kindness and good government, and returning federal money for investment, so we can fund our libraries, our streets and our community.”
