Sony PlayStation will launch a new Crunchyroll anime hub on the home screen of its PlayStation 5 gaming console next year to more closely align the company’s anime projects and anime-inspired games.
Launching in spring 2027, the new PS5 anime destination is “designed to make it easier for the PlayStation community to discover and explore the anime content they love,” according to Sony Interactive Entertainment.
Although Crunchyroll has been accessible on PS5 via an app since the game console’s release in 2020, the goal here is to make Crunchyroll an integral part of a PlayStation user’s home screen experience.
“Anime and video games have deeply engaged and overlapping fan communities, and the new experience will bring these worlds closer together on PS5,” Crunchyroll’s announcement reads. “Whether they’re a long-time anime fan or discovering a series through a game, character or world they already love, players will have a dedicated place to discover anime and anime-inspired games and easily access the full Crunchyroll app.
The new PS5-Crunchyroll was announced on Wednesday by PlayStation CEO Hideaki Nishino at the inaugural Crunchyroll Anime Future Forum, where Sony also revealed its new Crunchyroll Storyworks division.
“From joining Crunchyroll on PlayStation to the upcoming anime series Ghost of Tsushima: Legends,” said Crunchyroll President Rahul Purini. “Today, we’re taking this partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment even further with an anime hub on PlayStation. Serving fans means meeting them where they already are.”
The Crunchyroll-PlayStation integration follows Sony’s launch of “Live TV on PS5,” an offering of more than 100 free, ad-supported video channels available through the PlayStation 5 video game console. The PlayStation 5 FAST channel offering debuted in August and Sony Pictures Television plans to expand it globally in the coming months.
