Adam Driver talks about his role in Michael Mann’s film Heat 2 — and share an update on the filmmaker’s condition following his accidental shooting over the weekend.
Mann, the 83-year-old director of the 1995 crime thriller sequel, was hospitalized Sunday after accidentally shooting himself in the leg Saturday at a Los Angeles shooting range.
“On Saturday, at a shooting range, a gun accidentally discharged while holstered, causing a superficial injury to director Michael Mann. He was treated and is being released,” a representative for Mann said in a statement.
By appearing on The Rich Eisen Show On Wednesday, Driver provided an update on the four-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker, explaining that he contacted Mann as soon as he heard about the incident.
“He’s good,” Driver said. “I texted him immediately; he responded and was at work the next day.”
“He did the same move 20,000 times; he was shooting competitively, so I’m not sure what exactly happened,” Driver added.
The incident comes as Mann prepares to film Heat 2a sequel to his 1995 crime classic starring Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and the late Val Kilmer. The upcoming film is based on Mann’s 2022 novel of the same name, which serves as both a prequel and sequel to the original.
During the interview, Driver confirmed that he will play Otis Wardell, the main antagonist of the film, in Heat 2. The Hollywood Reporter first reported in October 2025 that Driver was circling the project.
Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale and Stephen Graham have also reportedly joined the cast, while Jerry Bruckheimer and Scott Stuber are said to be producing.
“I love Michael. I loved working with him on Ferraribut working on this, I’m excited,” Driver said. “The cast is so great.”
Driver also praised Mann’s screenplay. “As a screenplay, it is even more condensed and refined (than the novel). The film is a missile,” he added.
He will start working on the film next month. Driver said, “I kind of join in the beginning of December and we start shooting the beginning of next year.”
