Jimmy Kimmel tells Trump to shut up and resign after midterm elections

Jimmy Kimmel was quick to take aim at Donald Trump on election night after the 2026 midterm elections saw significant Democratic victories across the country.

But he wasn’t finished. On Wednesday night’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!after more results came in and explanations and excuses began to pour in for the blue wave and the GOP’s defeat, the host had some choice words for the president.

Kimmel particularly focused on how Trump claimed, “I wasn’t on the ballot and if I was we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!” »

“Oh, shut up. Shut up. Please. Give us a break for a day and shut that ridiculous mouth,” Kimmel said. “You’re such a spoiled brat. Have you ever learned anything? About good manners – or sportsmanship – or simple decency? Nothing is ever your fault!”

Kimmel added: “You were on the ballot. You’re like hair of a dog. You’re on everything. You’ve infected every nook and cranny of our lives.”

Indeed, Trump spent months saying he was on the ballot, or asking voters to pretend to be, with The Washington Post finding that he made this statement at least 63 times before Election Day.

Kimmel wasn’t the only late-night host to take issue with Trump’s about-face that “I wasn’t on the ballot.”

On NBC Late at nightSeth Meyers released a compilation of the multiple times Trump insisted he was essentially on the ballot in the run-up to the midterm elections.

“I hate to be the one to tell you this, but you were on the damn ballot, my man,” Meyers said. “Your name may not have been on it, but it’s not like everyone forgot who was president. You liked 30 rallies in the month leading up to the midterm elections. You wouldn’t shut up. You kept saying how good the senators were. You had it all going for you.”

And even though Trump hadn’t suggested he was on the ballot, the president supported many of the Republicans who lost, Kimmel pointed out.

“All your hand-picked major candidates lost! You chose Darline Graham to run in South Carolina; you kicked Thom Tillis out of the Senate; you supported that pathetic Ken Paxton in Texas; you bet it all on Vivek Ramaswamy and his disgusting campaign advertising; and if you hadn’t chosen Mr. Charisma JD Vance as your vice president, the Republicans would still have that Senate seat they lost in Ohio last night,” said Kimmel.

Kimmel also took issue with Trump, after “whining about election fraud,” The New York Times that he would accept the results.

“How is this news? Will you accept the results? Oh, thank you,” he said. “How gracious. The results aren’t yours to accept or reject – they’re results. Like, could you imagine that? “Spurs say they’ll accept loss to Knicks in NBA Finals “No! They don’t have to accept it! It’s the score!”

Kimmel then insisted that Trump resign.

“Stop already. Stop,” he said. “No one wants you. Even you don’t want to be president anymore. Take this billion dollars in crypto, buy an island – maybe (Jeffrey) Epstein’s island! Wouldn’t that be a perfect ending to this story?”

And the host indicated he was optimistic that a Vance presidency wouldn’t be so bad.

“And maybe you’re thinking, ‘Well, if he resigned, wouldn’t that make JD Vance president?’ Well, yes, it would. But here’s the thing about JD Vance: a person who went from “Donald Trump is America’s Hitler” to “Donald Trump is the greatest president of my generation” can go back. It’s easy when you don’t have a backbone. It’s a very good pinball machine.
