En route to Tuesday’s midterm rout, Democrats won back voters in virtually every sector of the electorate, reports the New York Times. Young voters particularly highlighted this trend. After turning to Donald Trump in 2024, voters under 30 supported Democratic candidates for the House of Representatives by 36 points this week, while those under 25 went for Democrats by a margin of more than 2 to 1, reports the Washington Post. The shift helped shift Congress to the Democrats and amounted to what pollster John Della Volpe called “a generational statement.”
THE Times notes that male voters under 30 shifted nearly 40 points in favor of Democrats. Hispanic voters, particularly young men and those without college degrees, also largely rallied behind Democrats, achieving once-elusive statewide victories in Texas and tighter races in Florida. White voters without college degrees, long the heart of Trump’s coalition, have moved significantly closer to the left in states like Ohio and Kansas. Black voters, particularly young black men, have largely reversed the Republican Party’s gains seen in 2024, and even voters over 65 have shifted toward Democrats.
